questions about joining
Who can join?
Any young person can come along to our rehearsals and see what it's like.
I like it, what next?
If you like it and feel that you're up for the challenge of singing with us, then sign up on the register.
That's it?
Well, yes. We don't really need to audition you - our conductor has a very good ear, and it will be obvious if there's a problem in terms of your singing. Also, youth choirs do not normally attract people who cannot sing at all, and if you can hold a note, you will be fine.
And what counts as young?
Tricky question
There's no easy answer because voices develop in different ways at different stages in different people. Essentially someone with a young voice: you might be 11, you might be 25, or any age in between, but there's something very distinctive about the sound of a young voice. If you're in this age-range, come along, and you'll find out whether the sound suits you or not.
OK, I'm in - what's expected of me?
We don't expect you to be the next Phil Potts, or anyone other than you for that matter - part of the package is developing your singing. It will be tough, and there will be moments when you hate it, but that's all part of the ride.
To get the best results we can, what we do expect is commitment and enthusiasm: regular attendance, concentration, and effort.
You will be asked to practise at home. Not in a homework sense, but in that singing is requires muscle tone and stamina, and so you have to train for it. If you are not and never want to be Vin Diesel, no problem - we're interested in strengthening internal muscles, not the obvious ones.
I can't sing, what can I do?
It's not the end. We need help with many things beyond singing: you can come to rehearsals to continue socialising in the breaks; and help out with organising the music, keeping things running smoothly, and advertising.
When can I come?
We rehearse on Tuesdays between 7 - 9 pm in St. Mary's Church, Tenby. Come along to a rehearsal and see how it goes. Do get in touch to make sure that it's on though!
It's in a church, is it christian?
No.
You will sing some "sacred music", because 95% of choral music is "sacred", but you will also sing a lot of secular music too.
small print
inTune is the first stage of a community music project run by St. Mary's Church, Tenby.
Whilst the choir is based in and supported by the Church, there is no religious expectation of you as a member of the choir. The artistic director's interest is purely musical.
Having said that, quite a bit of the repertoire will be "sacred" and some performances will be in churches; this is because much of the best choral music is written for the church, and the church offers great opportunities for many types of performance.
We are governed by the church's policies for working with children, which is derived from the Child Protection Act.
There will be at least two adults present at every meeting: our musical director, and A.N. Other, which follows official guidelines for working with children, and young or vulnerable adults.
